Is Bitter Orange A Safe Supplement For Fat Burning?
One ingredient that you may come across in some of the fat burning supplements you consider is bitter orange.
What is this and is it safe for you to use?
It’s important that whenever looking at various supplements to use that you take some time to consider what is in them, how they work, and whether you will be at risk for any side effects.
The last thing you want to do is put yourself in harm’s way and it’s important to realise that supplement companies don’t always have your best interests in mind.
This said, what is bitter orange?
Let’s go over some facts to know about this substance so that next time you come across it, you know what you’re getting yourself into.
If you have been interested in weight loss supplements for quite some time, you have likely heard of the term ephedra before.
This substance used to be added to many fat burning supplements as it would cause the metabolic rate to increase while providing a decreased appetite level. Perfect for fat burning, or so it would seem.
Until the negative side effects were seen. Many people reported racing heart rates while using this substance and some would also report difficulty sleeping, racing minds, and feeling jittery and anxious.
Clearly all undesirable effects for anyone, which is why we don’t see ephedra being used today after it was banned in 2004 by the FDA (in the USA).
This however, required a new substance to be used.
Enter bitter orange.
Similarities To Ephedra
Bitter orange is very similar to the ephedra that was used in those weight loss products only it is a natural substance that comes from the bitter orange plant.
It has been used for a wide variety of different reasons including to treat fungal skin infections, gastrointestinal disorders, as well as to help lower blood sugar levels in those who suffer from diabetes.
Some people may also use it to help reduce inflammation, muscular and joint pain, as well as to help reduce other pain of any kind.
As you can see, it’s pretty powerful stuff. In addition to the above, it’s also often used in weight loss products because just like ephedra, it increases energy, reduces appetite, and can help increase the metabolic rate.
All factors that will speed up fat burning.
The Safety Of Bitter Orange
As it currently stands, bitter orange is thought to be safe when consumed as an essential oil or in food, but possibly unsafe when taken in supplemental form, especially in weight loss drugs.
People tend to report very similar side effects that they did while using ephedra, so it should always be used with extreme caution.
It currently isn’t banned by the FDA, but this doesn’t mean you should feel safe putting it into your body.
Additionally, those who suffer from high blood pressure, heart disease, or any sort of irregular heart beat should not take bitter orange at all.
So all in all, while this ingredient may help speed the rate of weight loss and can be found in many of the fat burning products out there, it is one ingredient you need to tread carefully with.
If you are going to use a product containing it, always use the lowest recommended dose – and consider taking just half of that first.
See how you react and then evaluate whether this is something you want to keep taking.
It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to central nervous system stimulants like that of bitter orange of ephedra.
