Challenging Yourself With Obstacle Races, Adventure Racing and Marathons

Tough Mudder

Obstacle races like Tough Mudder are growing in popularity worldwide

If you’ve been hitting the gym or blasting the cardio training for quite some time and are ready to see what else you can tackle in your fitness journey, you may start looking into some of the extreme events that are out there.

Whether you are a runner, cyclist, or just someone who likes more adventurous obstacle types of courses, these events have something in store for you.

With a number of them happening all around the world, there’s no shortage of options.

Let’s take a closer look at the types of extreme events you can consider so that you can get a better idea of which might be right for you.

Extreme Ultra-Marathon’s

The first type of event to consider is the ultra marathon. Take note that these are not for the faint-hearted.

If you have never even performed a regular marathon before, start there before even considering moving to one of these events.

The extreme ultra-marathon events are those that last much longer than a full marathon, often expending up to 400 km in length total, lasting for six days or longer.

For those who take endurance cardio seriously, these will push you to your limit.

You’ll be running for days, seeing great sights as you go.

Find these in different climates including races that take place in the desert all the way to the South Pole where you are faced with the harsh elements that come with the territory.

Extreme Cycling

If running isn’t your thing, not to worry, there are plenty of cycling events as well that will push you to see what you can do.

Half Marathon

Test yourself with a half marathon or full marathon

Cycling events can be found in relay format where you’ll join with a team, each of you completing one leg on your own, or they can be done solo, taking on the elements in various parts of the world – such as a jungle.

Cycling events typically also span across days, so you’ll be facing large amounts of fatigue and still keep moving forward.

Obstacle Races

Tough Mudder, Spartan Race and other mud runs are a series of events that will have you attempting to overcome obstacles that stand in your way.

From running through mud pits to climbing over walls, you can be sure to work every single muscle group in your body.

These events call upon so many different areas of your fitness level, so are often taken on by those who are regularly involved in cross training.

Extreme Survival Events

Finally, you might also consider one of the extreme survival events that also challenge your endurance level while putting your personal survival and navigation skills to the test.

These events typically have you fending for yourself as you have to find your way to the finish line, choosing your own path of least resistance – or at least you hope that’s the case.

These events are great for those who aren’t just about seeing what they can do fitness-wise, but mentally as well.

So as you can see, there are plenty of great options to consider here when trying to figure out which extreme event to enter.

Do some careful thought before filling out that application however as these simply are not races to be taken lightly.

Be sure that you are fully committed to putting in the necessary time and energy to get your training in.
